Ghosts and legends: Rome’s secret Halloween side

When night falls and shadows lengthen over the quiet alleys, Rome shows its most mysterious side. On Halloween night, don’t miss a special tour to discover the darkest corners of the Eternal City, where the boundaries between history and legend become blurred, and the voices of the past still seem to echo among the stones. An itinerary during which the city is transformed into a theatre of disturbing tales, apparitions and troubled souls.

It starts from a place as fascinating as it is unknown: the Museum of the Souls in Purgatory, housed in the neo-Gothic church of the Sacred Heart of Suffrage on the Lungotevere Prati, where a small and surprising collection of documents and objects imprinted by alleged spirits recounts the obsession with the afterlife and ghosts in post-unification Italy. It is an evocative stop to begin looking at Rome from a new perspective: that of the invisible.
The tour continues to the majestic yet disturbing Castel Sant’Angelo, where history and legend have been intertwined for centuries. Its walls have seen popes pass by and illustrious prisoners incarcerated. Today, they are guardians of memories that find no peace. Here, people still talk about the ghost of Marozia, a Roman noblewoman who was sentenced to a gruesome death; the tormented spirit of Beatrice Cenci, protagonist of one of the most famous trials in 16th-century Rome, whose figure appears every year between 10 and 11 September at nightfall, holding the head of her father, whom she murdered; and Mastro Titta, official executioner of the Papal States, whose presence lingers in the areas where he carried out his sentences, walking slowly and wearing a red cloak.
The next stop is a maze of streets marked by forgotten stories and suspended presences. In Via dei Banchi di Santo Spirito and Via dei Banchi Nuovi, the tragic destinies of historical figures intertwine: this is where the beautiful Imperia lived, a famous Renaissance courtesan who became the lover of the most powerful men of 16th-century Rome, including the banker Agostino Chigi and Raffaello Sanzio, and whose soul, according to legend, never really left her neighbourhood. There will also be tales of blood and violence linked to controversial figures such as Benvenuto Cellini, a brilliant sculptor and unpunished murderer, and Pietro Aretino, a feared and irreverent intellectual whose fame is intertwined with dark and mysterious episodes.

A special opportunity to discover the most restless and fascinating side of Rome, between historical truths and popular narratives, on a night where anything can happen. A tour that ignites the imagination and invites you to listen to the whispers of the past… if you dare to hear them!
